maybe diamonds are forever...

... but hopefully, we will always remember where they come from before getting another one/a new one.

(of course, there's also the question of what are these poor people in africa and india going to do without a job, but maybe we should rather insist on the dutch diamond cartels to pay them real wages according to the product they work on).

razorlight's somewhere else track

for people buying the new razorlight album in the us or its vicinity/continent, it's quite unlikely to find the song that topped the charts in the uk, somewhere else. i have to admit that i like razorlight although it's not a life-changing band. it's a nice alternative to the whole soft alternative rock out there, mixing new elements with the classic ones a la clash (but not punk at all, really).

somewhere else is only available as a download from their site and still, only as a poor 64 kbps licensed wma track that you cannot play on your ipod (bastards!). so, for a very short time (before i get the cease and desist notice), find a mp3 version of somewhere else, well...

quién recuerda a viviana gallardo?

Turkey for thanksgiving? Hope you choke!

meat is murder - the smiths

heifer whines could be human cries
closer comes the screaming knife
this beautiful creature must die
this beautiful creature must die
a death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER

and the flesh you so fancifully fry
is not succulent, tasty or kind
it's death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER

and the calf that you carve with a smile
is MURDER
and the turkey you festively slice
is MURDER
do you know how animals die?

kitchen aromas aren’t very homely
it’s not comforting, cheery or kind
it's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
of MURDER

it's not natural, normal or kind
the flesh you so fancifully fry
the meat in your mouth
as you savour the flavour
of MURDER

no, no, no, it's MURDER
no, no, no, it's MURDER
Oh ... and who hears when animals cry?

tell your music teachers to get a new job!

in the chair is a brand new software that help music students to practice with a full orchestra if needed without leaving the comfort of their own room and without being harassed by teachers who think they are the reincarnation of liszt. for some $20 a month (way cheaper than any music teacher), anyone can plug a microphone into their computer, start playing along a band or orchestra and being judged by their performance. i need to dust my bass guitar, but if this works well, i might someday manage to play a decent chord!

since halloween is just around the corner...

a night like this

you scared me, she said
i should’ve known better, i should’ve known it could only be you
silly, silly, me… i got really scared
on a night like this, i get nervous at the first “boo!”
or at the wood creaking under the weight of your feet
funny how things happen, don’t you think?
on any other night, i’d stay in bed if someone screamed
but tonight, i’d probably hide under the sink
on a night like this, i get nervous at the sign of blood
whereas any other night, i’d probably have a sip
funny how things happen, don’t you think?
a girl like me, trapped in this deliciously ghoulish world
scared by you, a simple mortal, a simple soul
dressed in old clothes, painted face and fake fangs
i feel your temperature, you’re not even cold
but somehow there’s something in you that makes me…

uneasy?
fragile?
vulnerable?

i don’t exactly know which word she was going to use
i didn’t let her finish, i had something to do

i scared her right there and then
i had had enough of her

on a night like this, no one pays much attention
to another person screaming, to another trick
on a night like this, no one feels as much tension
as a girl like her living at night, behaving like a freak
funny how things happen, don’t you think?
there is so much that a man can stand
but when his only friend dies at the hands of a vampire
a silver bullet needs to be fired
right at where her heart should be
right at where all her sins lie
i feel her last breath as i hold her hand

fragile
vulnerable
vampire

a lesson in rhythm

A Lesson In Crime

a lesson in crime by tokyo police club (paper bag records) is a very nice option if you're tired of the same old stuff playing on the radio. they remind me of many bands at once (their press kit mentions bowie, joy division and the arcade fire, among others). as usual, feel free to buy at emusic.

download "nature of the experiment" (mp3, 192kbps)

the only son makes good songs!

the drop to the top

the drop to the top

only son (cassette recordings) sounds honestly good to me. the solo project of jack dishel, the songs that i've managed to listen from his first album are very melodic, somehow reminiscent of matthew sweet and belle & sebastian. if you go to his myspace page, there are 3 songs to listen to. for those with a few extra credits, buy the best tracks at emusic.

sing this song whilst you shower!

Gnarls Barkley
"Crazy"
(from the debut album "St. Elsewhere:)

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions had an echo and so much space

And when you're out there without care
Yeah I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me Crazy
Does that make me Crazy
Does that make me Crazy
Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Come on now
who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you
think you are, ha ha ha bless your soul
you really think you're in control

I think you're Crazy
I think you're Crazy
I think you're Crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on the limb
All I remember is thinking I want to be like them.
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little
It looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

But Maybe I'm Crazy
Maybe you're Crazy
Maybe we're Crazy
Probably

to ian curtis: this band rocks your way!!!

what if a band could go back in time, steal a little bit of that rough joy division sound and pay attention to the RCA guys go tried to convince ian curtis et al to use synths on their songs, then come back to this age and time and release music inspired by mancunian post punk in the late 70s yet well anchored in the present? well, the band exists and you should listen to them. their name is infomatik and now, feel free to abandon my blog and go to their audio page and download 4 rather good songs from their album and let them know you liked their music! as an interesting note, these guys managed to open for DJ Peter Hook (Hookie!!!), who I hope was sober enough to enjoy their act.

suavemente

how can you leave sad things behind...

Leave The Sad Things Behind

leave the sad things behind (birdman records) is the name of paula frazer's third album after quitting tarnation, an alt-folk/country band that in my opinion was one of the best signings for 4ad in the late 90s. from the promotional mp3 for this album, i can tell that paula's still in great vocal shape, delivering emotions with every single word. i hope you like this song (always on my mind, but not another elvis presley's cover) as much as i did.

buy at itunes music store

download "always on my mind" (mp3, 192kbps)

bonus tracks from other realeases from paula:
"watercolor lines" (mp3, 192kbps)
"waiting for you" (mp3, 192kbps)
"everything i own" (mp3, 192kbps)
"rhymes of goodbye" (mp3, 192kbps)

the last mp3 is from a great compilation, shanti project collection 2 and features new and rare tracks from kristin hersh (formerly of throwing muses), melissa auf der maur (hole/smashing pumpkins), mimi parker (low), rebecca gates (spinanes), edith frost, paula frazer and julie doiron (formerly of eric's trip). for that one, you can buy it at itunes music store as well.

let's talk about sex!

Citrus

citrus is the new album from the nyc band asobi seksu (friendly fire recordings), and it is simply beautiful. imagine a band that mixed the best of lush, my bloody valentine and cocteau twins and produced brilliant songs in japanese and english, and that would define asobi seksu in a nutshell. listen to these 3 gems and buy their album. oh, and by the way, asobi seksu means "playful sex" in japanese... hence the title of this post.

from gaza with love...

The Pineapple Fields

the pineapple fields are an indie band that had i decided not to let you know that their record label is called men of israel records and that they come from said land (more specifically from the gaza strip), one would have placed them alongside red house painters. that's what awaits you with the available mp3 to download. give it a listen and feel happy about listening to bands this good in bits + beatz! the pineapple fields's album is called the pit that became a tower.

this one is for all expats who fall in love with their new home

Sus 40 Tangos Mas Famosos

carlos gardel had a voice that is impossible to describe without using the words powerful, sentimental, heavenly and depressive... all the words that describe tango from its roots. gardel was probably the ian curtis of his lifetime, in terms of voice and impact in future generations. i thought of him today since he was probably french (sorry to my uruguayan and argentinian friends) and being july 14, what better date to place a mp3 of one of his most famous songs, "mi buenos aires querido", a song about the closest city to paris in latin america. if you're feeling nostalgic for whatever reason, listen to that song and weep your heart out (no, i don't care if that expression makes sense or not). listen to this double album by carlos gardel (suramusic s.r.l) and realise that his tragic death (like ian's) put an end to a magnificent career.

emigre #9: designed by 23 envelope

back issue: emigre 9: "the London-based music label 4ad has provided the emigre office (and thousands of fans around the world) with some of the most inspiring music to date. we were particularly impressed with the comprehensive design approach of the label and decided to devote an entire issue to the work and ideals of this indie label, which surprisingly remains relatively unknown in the u.s.
the issue features lengthy interviews with vaughan oliver and ivo watts-russell, respectively the graphic designer and founder of 4ad, as well as essays on the throwing muses and cocteau twins, two of the label's most successful bands.
also includes an 8-page insert specially designed for this issue of emigre magazine by 23 envelope, the in-house design team at 4ad.

all this to say that i love most past and present 4ad music and all things designed by vaughan... if he only allowed me to publish a nice 2+ hour chat we had back in '99... i know all of you would love it.

halou: it's oh so good to see you back!

Wholeness & Separation Stonefruit
halou (vertebrae): wholeness and separation + stonefruit

i can't stop talking about it. i remember being in a 4ad chat room in yahoo 1.0 and this guy ryan offering me a free tape with his band's music. i accepted and it was love at first sight. back then, they were called anymore and i loved their cocteau twins-like sound. when they morphed into halou, i thought i had died and gone to heaven (you can read my interview with them here). now, several albums, singles, eps and remixes after, they sound even better. they've got a new album (wholeness and separation) and a new single out (stonefruit) and i recommend both of them eyes closed.

buy at emusic

from the album,
download "honeythief" (mp3, 192kbps)
download "everything is ok" (mp3, 192kbps)
download "stonefruit" (mp3, 192kbps)

from the single,
download "everything is ok (different)" (mp3, 192kbps)

please note that when i will be given the option between emusic and itunes, i will always choose the former because it's given me the chance to find so many things at an excellent price. if you're not a member, join today (drop me a line and i will guide you through it)!

mixel pixel: what a gorgeous sound

You're The Kind Of Girl

this is the kind of music i like... i still have to listen to other songs, but in this one, the voices reminded me of matt johnson from the the singing with a younger, poppier sinead, but just as nice. electronic? kinda. loungey? kinda. lovely? absolutely! listen to mixel pixel (kanine records)

syd barrett, you will be missed.

Founding Pink Floyd member Roger "Syd" Barrett died Friday (July 7) from complications due to diabetes, says a source close to the band. Barrett, 60, suffered from mental health problems and spent most of the past 30 years living a secluded life in Cambridge, England with his mother. The other members of Pink Floyd issued a statement that read: "The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett’s death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire."Pink Floyd formed in 1965 as a blues-rock combo featuring Barrett on guitar and vocals, bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright. They quickly acquired a reputation for trippy live shows featuring extended improvisational jams and elaborate lighting and visual projections. Their first two albums, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and 1968's A Saucerful of Secrets, established the group as an early pioneer of psychedelic rock, led by Barrett's innovative songwriting, by turns childlike and sinister. But before the group had even finished recording its second album, Barrett's mental health problems were becoming increasingly apparent, and his experimentation with psychedelic drugs was making them worse. A second guitarist, David Gilmour, was brought in to help finish the album and to play Barrett's parts during the group's live shows, when Barrett would frequently become paralyzed mid-song or sometimes just wander off the stage. Eventually, Gilmour replaced Barrett altogether. With help from Gilmour and members of the band Soft Machine, Barrett managed to record two solo albums in the early '70s, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, which are widely regarded as underground classics. But his mental health continued to deteriorate, and by the mid-'70s he was living in virtual seclusion in Cambridge, while his former bandmates entered their most commercially and critically fertile period, releasing Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. But even if Barrett was no longer a member of Pink Floyd, his influence on the group still loomed large; both albums, written primarily by Waters, deal with issues of isolation and madness. At Pink Floyd's last performance, a brief reunion set during last year's Live 8 benefit concerts, the group dedicated "Wish You Were Here" to Barrett.

reg: oh. yeah, yeah. they did give us that. uh, that's true. yeah.
commando #3: and the sanitation.
loretta: oh, yeah, the sanitation, reg. remember what the city used to be like?
reg: yeah. all right. i'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the romans have done.
matthias: and the roads.
reg: well, yeah. obviously the roads. i mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? but apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--
commando: irrigation.
xerxes: medicine.
commandos: huh? heh? huh...
commando #2: education.
commandos: ohh...
reg: yeah, yeah. all right. fair enough.
commando #1: and the wine.
commandos: oh, yes. yeah...
francis: yeah. yeah, that's something we'd really miss, reg, if the romans left. huh.
commando: public baths.
loretta: and it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, reg.
francis: yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. let's face it. they're the only ones who could in a place like this.
commandos: hehh, heh. heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
reg: all right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the romans ever done for us?

from reality: check the 20 most important things that the muslims did in the past that are still with us... even the word camera is a muslim word! and i bet that's only the tip of the iceberg!

the proposition

"in the harsh, unforgiving landscape of the outback, charlie burns is presented with an impossible proposition by local law enforcer captain stanley: the only way to save his younger brother mikey from the gallows is to track down and kill arthur, his psychotic older brother."

take a look at the first film written by no other than nick cave by clicking here. the soundtrack is excellent (and by nick cave and warren ellis) and i might post an mp3 soon... if i get at least 1 request for it.

no te diste cuenta
cuando la nieve dejó de caer
sin embargo
tenías los ojos abiertos
pensabas?

recomendación musical: songs of lemuria

new order - blue monday

very short story with a link

we all remember indie music. it was here well before we knew what to call it. i remember it from my first days wandering in used cd shops, first around san jose and then in kansas. i remember those days in the late 80s and early 90s, with an explosion of bands no one has ever heard before. bands with little or no past and definitely uncertain future. some of those bands had already died by the time i got my hands into some of their music. then, something happened to me and i forgot about indie, at least new indie bands. fast forward to the present, when indie bands are releasing their debut albums on major labels (are they still indie?), hoping to have a bigger lifespan, a bigger audience... but i am sure their albums will soon be in those same shelves i browsed 15 years ago or more. i am sure they will be indie again by the time they get the boot by the major labels, and we will like them even more. in the meantime, listen to thebooth on myspace. this week's featured band is we are scientists and they sound quite good. give it a go!
